    The Relationship of Corporate Governance and Firm Performance

    This survey based research administered 300 questionnaires to the middle and top level managers of 130 Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) listed firms. The questionnaire used in this study was designed to study the relationship between corporate governance structure and firm performance. The findings of this research shows that among corporate governance dimensions, “commitment to corporate governance” ,  “transparency and disclosure” and “Structure and function of Board” have the highest middle and lowest mean values respectively assigned by the sample studied. Further regression analysis showed that “commitment to corporate governance” ,  “transparency and disclosure” have significant positive relationship with firm performance. Finally study find that “Structure and function of Board” has positive with firm performance that is not statistically significant.     Identification of ionotrophic purinergic receptors in Huh-7 cells and their response towards structural proteins of HCV genotype 3a

    Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major health problem in developing countries including Pakistan. Chronic HCV infection results in progressive liver disease including fibrosis, cirrhosis, insulin resistance and eventually hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Ionotrophic purinergic (P2X) receptors are identified to involve in a spectrum of physiological and pathophysiological processes. However, the role of P2X receptors in HCV liver associated diseases still remains to be investigated. The current study was designed to identify the presence of P2X receptors in human liver cells. Furthermore, it investigates the response of P2X receptors towards HCV structural proteins (E1E2). To determine that how many isoforms of P2X receptors are expressed in human liver cells, human hepatoma cell line (Huh-7) was used. Transcripts (mRNA) of five different isoforms of P2X receptors were identified in Huh-7 cells. To examine the gene expression of identified isoforms of P2X receptors in presence of HCV structural proteins E1E2, Huh-7/E1E2 cell line (stably expressing HCV structural proteins E1E2) was used. The results showed significant increase (6.2 fold) in gene expression of P2X4 receptors in Huh-7/E1E2 cells as compared to control Huh-7 cells. The findings of present study confirmed the presence of transcripts of five different isoforms of P2X receptors in human liver cells and suggest that P2X4 receptors could be represented an important component of the purinergic signaling complex in HCV induced liver pathogenesis

    Delay in diagnosis of brain tumors: a dilemma for neurosurgical community due to spirituality and quackery in a developing country

    Objectives: Primary and metastatic brain tumors are a significant cause of mortality and morbidity. The complex pathway to a cancer diagnosis is not human error and the achievements of better outcomes solely depend on the early diagnosis and management of symptomatic tumors. The estimated time between the first presentation to any health care professional and diagnosis is approximately 3 times longer in the UK as compared to other developed countries. Material and Methods: It was a descriptive study and included 52 patients who were admitted to the Neurosurgery department at Jinnah hospital Lahore. The required data were collected either directly from the patients or from the hospital record of discharged patients. Our study compares the time interval difference of presentation of a patient to a local care provider (Quacks, Hakeem, and spiritual healers) and Neurosurgeon as well as delay in surgical intervention even after diagnosis and radiological investigations. Results: 54% of patients presented with supratentorial lesions and out of these, parietal lobe lesions were more common (39%) while 29% of lesions were infratentorial. Around 50% of patients presented to a Local Care Provider within 20 days. However, only 42% of patients presented to a neurosurgeon after 6-9 months of the onset of symptoms. Conclusion: Public awareness is the key to timely diagnosis, proper management, and better outcomes. The availability of specialists in peripheral hospitals can bring a change in this regard

    Reptile enamel matrix proteins: Selection, divergence, and functional constraint

    The three major enamel matrix proteins (EMPs): amelogenin (AMEL), ameloblastin (AMBN), and enamelin (ENAM), are intrinsically linked to tooth development in tetrapods. However, reptiles and mammals exhibit significant differences in dental patterning and development, potentially affecting how EMPs evolve in each group. In most reptiles, teeth are replaced continuously throughout life, while mammals have reduced replacement to only one or two generations. Reptiles also form structurally simple, aprismatic enamel while mammalian enamel is composed of highly organized hydroxyapatite prisms. These differences, combined with reported low sequence homology in reptiles, led us to predict that reptiles may experience lower selection pressure on their EMPs as compared with mammals. However, we found that like mammals, reptile EMPs are under moderate purifying selection, with some differences evident between AMEL, AMBN, and ENAM. We also demonstrate that sequence homology in reptile EMPs is closely associated with divergence times, with more recently diverged lineages exhibiting high homology, along with strong phylogenetic signal. Lastly, despite sequence divergence, none of the reptile species in our study exhibited mutations consistent with diseases that cause degeneration of enamel (e.g. amelogenesis imperfecta). Despite short tooth retention time and simplicity in enamel structure, reptile EMPs still exhibit purifying selection required to form durable enamel.We calculated the percent identity between amino acid sequences of ameloblastin from various reptile groups. Crocodilians exhibit the highest sequence identity, while identity across squamates was substantially lower.     Prevalence, diversity and disease association of <i>Helicobacter pylori</i> in dyspeptic patients from Pakistan

    Introduction: The etiological association of Helicobacter pylori with gastric ulcer (GU), gastric cancer (GC), and duodenal ulcer (DU) is well-known. Understanding the epidemiology of H. pylori facilitates the estimation of disease burden in a certain population. This study presents the diversity of H. pylori genotypes and their association with different clinical outcomes among dyspeptic patients in Pakistan over a period of four years. Methodology: Gastric biopsy samples from a total of 450 dyspeptic individualswere subjected to PCR, genotypingand histology. Results: A total of 201 (45%) cases were found positive for H. pylori. The detection rate was high in GU (91%), DU (86%) and GC (83%) cases compared with those cases who had intact gastric mucosa (18%). Histology revealed the presence of infection in 68% of cases of mild/chronic nonspecific gastritis with others belonging to the GU sequel. cagA gene carriage was observed in 104 (51%) cases or mostly from DU, GU and GC groups, of which 97 were Western type strains while 3 were East-Asian type strains that are rarely observed in South Asia. vacA allelic variant s1am1 was most commonly observed, followed by s1am2, and s1bm1, with direct correlation in diseased cases (gastritis, GU, DU and GC). Prevalent genotypic combinations were s1am1/cagA- in gastritis and s1am1/cagA+ in DU, GU, and GC. Conclusions: Our study indicates the predominant circulation of Western type cagA and vacAs1am1 type H. pylori strains in Pakistan.</br

    The Observation of Up-going Charged Particles Produced by High Energy Muons in Underground Detectors

    An experimental study of the production of up-going charged particles in inelastic interactions of down-going underground muons is reported, using data obtained from the MACRO detector at the Gran Sasso Laboratory. In a sample of 12.2 10^6 single muons, corresponding to a detector livetime of 1.55 y, 243 events are observed having an up-going particle associated with a down-going muon. These events are analysed to determine the range and emission angle distributions of the up-going particle, corrected for detection and reconstruction efficiency. Measurements of the muon neutrino flux by underground detectors are often based on the observation of through-going and stopping muons produced in ΜΌ\nu_\mu interactions in the rock below the detector. Up-going particles produced by an undetected down-going muon are a potential background source in these measurements.     Nuclearite search with the MACRO detector at Gran Sasso

    In this paper we present the results of a search for nuclearites in the penetrating cosmic radiation using the scintillator and track-etch subdetectors of the MACRO apparatus. The analyses cover the beta =v/c range at the detector depth (3700 hg/cm^2) 10^-5 < beta < 1; for beta = 2 x 10^-3 the flux limit is 2.7 x 10^-16 cm^-2 s^-1 sr^-1 for an isotropic flux of nuclearites, and twice this value for a flux of downgoing nuclearites.Comment: 16 pages, 4 Encapsulated Postscript figures, uses article.sty.     Atmospheric neutrino induced muons in the MACRO detector

    A measurement of the flux of neutrino-induced muons using the MACRO detector is presented. Different event topologies, corresponding to different neutrino parent energies can be detected. The upward throughgoing muon sample is the larger event sample. The observed upward-throughgoing muons are 26% fewer than expected and the zenith angle distribution does not fit with the expected one. Assuming neutrino oscillations, both measurements suggest maximum mixing and Dm2 of a few times 10-3 eV2. The other samples are due to the internally produced events and to upward-going stopping muons. These data show a regular deficit of observed events in each angular bin, as expected assuming neutrino oscillations with maximum mixing, in agreement with the analysis of the upward-throughgoing muon sample.Comment: 7 pages 6 figures to appear in the proceedings of XVIII International Conference on Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics (Neutrino'98), Takayama, Japan 4-9 June, 199
